Christ was too “liberal”

September 29th, 2008

Someone is described as “liberal” if he does not trouble himself too much with rules.  It is someone who wants to be free of restrictions and rules (“libertas” = freedom).

In this context, the Pharisees could have described Christ as a liberal:  Someone who does not concern himself with certain religious rules and regulations.  Someone who removed a number of items from their sin-index.  Christ, for example, “committed” the following sins or allowed His disciples to commit it:

  1. He healed the sick on the Sabbath (Matt 12:14Matt 12:14
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. held...: or, took counsel
    );
  2. He drank wine and ate food that was forbidden (Matt 11:19Matt 11:19
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
    );
  3. He mixed with sinners and tax-collectors (Matt 11:19Matt 11:19
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
    );
  4. He also had a discussion with a Samaritan woman (John 4:9John 4:9
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
    );
  5. He allowed his disciples to pluck grain and to eat it on the Sabbath (Matt 12:1-2Matt 12:1-2
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    12 1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
    ), and
  6. He allowed them not to fast and to disregard the ceremonial hand washing before they eat (Matt 9:14Matt 9:14
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?
    ; Matt 15:2Matt 15:2
    English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
    ).

A true liberal!

 It didn’t go much better with Christ’s disciples.  Many Christians were opposed to the disciples’ view of sin.  Some of the church members wanted to make several Old Testament laws obligatory again, like for instance the observance of the Sabbath, the circumcision, the celebrations of the Jewish festivals and the avoidance of certain foods (cf. Col 2:2-23Col 2:2-23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

).  Furthermore, Paul also said that it’s not a sin to buy and eat meat from a slaughterhouse where meat is sacrificed to an idol before it is sold (1 Cor 10:23-331 Cor 10:23-33
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

Greeks 33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
).  Another item that is removed from the human-made sin-list!

The “everything-is-sin-christians” could probably also describe Christ’s view of sin as “liberal”.

A sinful view of sin

September 25th, 2008

Some people think it would have been wonderful if the Bible provided us with a complete catalogue of sin.  We would then have been able to quickly look up if someone’s views or behaviour is sinful or not.  We would have known exactly what is right and wrong in all situations, so that we would have been capable of living a wonderful obedient life

The Bible is, however, no catalogue of what may and may not, nor a list of sin.  The Bible indeed contains many prescriptions that are directly applicable in certain situations, but it also contains many broad principles that we ought to apply in different situations.

 Because the Bible does not provide a sin-catalogue, many people create one for themselves.  For some Christians almost everything is sin.  The Pharisees, for example, made many laws for the people. Jesus comments on this (Mat 23:4Mat 23:4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

).  These additional “sins” make peoples’ lives extremely difficult.  If we regard almost everything as sin, one of the following is usually the consequence:

  • we give up and become reckless, or
  • we become despaired, melancholic and very unhappy.

It is abomination to God if we accuse someone of sin, who is in fact innocent (Prov 17:15Prov 17:15
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

).  A sinful view of sin is contrary to the freedom with which Christ has made as free (Gal 4:1-11Gal 4:1-11
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: elements: or, rudiments 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. 8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. 9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? turn ye again: or, turn ye back elements: or, rudiments 10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. 11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

).  Christ says (Mat. 11:28-30):  “Take My Yoke on you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest to your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light”.

A sinful view of sin causes us to drift away from God.

Knowledge of scriptures leads to knowledge of sin

September 21st, 2008

The Bible regards sin seriously, as it causes us to become disobedient to God’s commands, and because of that, we become instruments of the Devil and estranged from God.  The believer should therefore plead with God in the following words of Psa 25:2Psa 25:2
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.

(Afrikaans hymn)[1]: “Teach your ways to me, Lord, show me the right path, make my heart inclined to proceed onto it with eagerness” (cf. Psa 119:12Psa 119:12
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
).  To walk God’s path we must spiritually discern what is sinful and what is not, because the path of sin is often tempting, but it is a false track, leading us away from God!

We can only obtain knowledge of false tracks, if we have good knowledge of God’s path and His commands.  Moreover: We should not only learn God’s commands, we must also pray that God wil work within our hearts the eagerness and desire to tread in His ways and to stay clear from paths of sin (cf. Psa 119:20Psa 119:20
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

Psa 119:77Psa 119:77
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.
).

The desire to obtain deep and thorough knowledge of God’s will, is however not fulfilled by God pouring the detail and depth of the Bible into our heads.  The knowledge we pray from God is simultaneously a gift of God and the result of our hard work.  The poet of Psalm 119:73Psalm 119:73
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

JOD. 73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

prays:  “Give me understanding, so that I may learn your commandments”.  The writer of Proverbs 2 (Prov 2:4-5Prov 2:4-5
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
) tells us that if we seek wisdom as silver and search for it as for a hidden treasure, then we shall find the knowledge of God.  Paul prays that the Colossians might grow in their knowledge (Col 1:10Col 1:10
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
; cf. 2 Peter 3:182 Peter 3:18
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
). Without in-depth knowledge of God’s Word, we become victims of sinful emotions, thoughts, words, schools of thought and deeds.

Knowledge of sin is impossible without in-depth knowledge of the Scriptures and true faith.

Sin: an old-fashioned term?

September 17th, 2008

For many people the term “sin” is an old-fashioned term that shouldn’t be taken too seriously and about which one shouldn’t think too much.  Even Christians hesitate to describe someone’s conduct as “sin”, because such a description is often called intolerant and condemnatory.  To speak of sin is no longer fashionable.

The Bible judges differently about the issue, though.  The term “sin”, as well as other terms which denote the same subject matter (transgression, iniquity and wicked; cf. Psa 32:1Psa 32:1
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

and  Psa 119:155Psa 119:155

155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.

English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

 Sin must be viewed with the greatest earnestness, as it leads to eternal death, the hellish infernal (Jam 1:15Jam 1:15
